physical therapy

We offer one-on-one, hands-on in–clinic, or virtual sessions. In each session, you will receive individualized expert care, including McKenzie Method Mechanical Diagnosis and Therapy (MDT), research-proven to be the most reliable assessment tool in the field. We use this in combination with advanced manual therapy, joint mobilizations and manipulations when indicated, soft tissue and breath work, stress maintenance and mindfulness, ergonomic assessments, and so much more.

We treat injuries from head to toe, literally migraines to bunions, and all in between, while giving you a greater understanding of the individual tools you need in order to heal.

movement and strength

Hailing from Missoula, Montana, Alyssa brings over a decade of coaching experience, with experience coaching individuals from recreational settings to collegiate athletes.

She holds a B.S. in Exercise Science, a Masters in Educational Leadership, and is certified as a Strength and Conditioning Specialist through the National Strength and Conditioning Association (CSCS/NSCA).

Alyssa’s programming prioritizes injury prevention, always including appropriate modification and/or progression, to build a strong foundation that allows for continual progression toward her clients’ goals.

She believes in the continuous education and growth of herself and her clients and will go above and beyond in providing insight into when and why certain exercises are implemented, giving her clients the tools needed to crush their training and goals.

Whether your goals are injury prevention, mobility, strength or sport-specific, Alyssa is a wonderful asset to have on your wellness journey.

  • trigger point dry needling

Dry needling (DN) is a technique physical therapists use to treat pain and movement impairments by inserting a needle into the target muscle group. The physical therapist inserts a "dry" needle, one without medication or injection to target trigger points. Trigger points (TrP) are taut bands of muscle that are tender to the touch and often refer pain to other areas of the body. Targeting these areas via DN can help release tension and pain, improve blood flow, and restore range of motion and function. We believe the practice of DN will enable our patients to get better faster and prevent future disabilities.

  • dry needling vs acupuncture

Although the same type of needle is used, dry needling is not acupuncture. Acupuncture is based on traditional Chinese medicine and is guided by a different philosophy which targets meridian or energy points throughout the body. DN is a part of modern Western medicine and targets TrPs which are shown to directly correlate with pain and dysfunction.

  • what to expect

    Technique

There are many different DN techniques. Here at Converge, Dr. Amy and Dr. Jo are trained through Myopain Seminars, which offers courses in 25+ countries and was the first to bring DN to the US in 1997. We believe the technique taught by Myopain Seminars is the most specific and effective technique.

    Is DN painful?

When a TrP is needled, it is common for the muscle to twitch and produce a cramping sensation. It is also common for the needle to produce an achey or pinchy sensation.

Muscle soreness following DN can last up to 24 hours, depending on the size of the area targeted, the muscle group and personal factors. Relief can be achieved following one needling session and your PT will use their discretion to decide how often an area should be needled depending on your needs and response to the technique.

  • You can receive DN as part of any physical therapy visit. If you are already a patient, inquire about this service on your next visit. You do not need a consult prior to DN, but your therapist will likely spend some time getting to know your specific needs on the first visit to ensure you get the most benefit from this service.

climbing assessment

We can assess your climbing form and movement to guide you on the most efficient way to recruit the proper muscles while climbing. This is essential in preventing climbing injuries, managing and ceasing active injuries, and reintroducing climbing after major surgery or injury. We will observe your movement on and off the climbing wall, and on a hang board. You will then walk away with an understanding of how to recruit and move on and off the wall, exercises to assist in any weaknesses, and an immediate application of how to climb, hang, and train effectively.

“Amy was knowledgeable, friendly, & worked with me to figure out the best way for me to heal the chronic pain in my arm. She listened carefully to me and very kindly went out of her way to accommodate my brief visit to Salt Lake. My pain is gone now, thanks to her treatment & recommendations, & I'm able to climb like I was before the injury. Thank you!” - Christine
